Senior Commercial Counsel — Hamburg or Paris

The Trade Desk is a global technology company and the world’s leading independent platform for digital advertising, with nearly 4,000 employees across more than 30 offices. Our technology helps advertisers reach the right audiences across the open internet — from streaming TV and podcasts to mobile apps, news, and more.

Advertising powers the content people love. By making it more transparent, effective, and responsible, we help support trusted journalism, quality entertainment, and creators worldwide. The world’s brands and agencies rely on us to reach their customers and grow their businesses responsibly.

The scale of our platform brings unique technical challenges — from processing massive datasets in real time to building systems that operate reliably on a global scale. When you work here, your impact is worldwide. We welcome diverse perspectives, encourage curiosity, and build teams that learn from one another. If you’re driven to solve meaningful challenges, we’d love to meet you.

Our Legal team is a globally connected group of approximately 65 lawyers and paralegals supporting the business across a broad range of commercial, regulatory, privacy, and corporate matters. As a key member of our EMEA Legal team, you will have the opportunity to work on high-profile, cross-border matters at the intersection of technology, digital advertising, media, and data.

We are seeking a highly motivated lawyer to act as a trusted legal advisor to our Sales, Business Development, Finance, and other cross-functional teams across the EMEA region and beyond. In this role, you will support strategic commercial initiatives, help drive complex customer and partner relationships, and advise on a broad range of legal and business matters. You must be able to exercise sound legal judgement in a fast-paced environment, work effectively across cultures and jurisdictions, and translate complex legal concepts into practical, business-focused solutions.

WHAT YOU'LL DO:
  • Exercise exceptional judgment to advise and contribute to the overall success of the business.
  • Structure, draft, review, negotiate, and manage a broad range of commercial and technology-related agreements, including master service agreements and associated documentation supporting customer relationships.
  • Partner closely with cross-functional and regional partners to provide legal advice on matters of varying complexity, sensitivity, and risk.
  • Identify, research, analyze, and advise business teams on commercial contracting, data security, privacy, and technology-related matters.
  • Advise on deal terms, contract structures, and business initiatives by developing practical and commercial solutions.
  • Keep abreast of legislative and regulatory developments across EMEA and globally that may impact the business.
  • Communicate complex legal concepts in clear, practical terms to stakeholders across multiple functions and jurisdictions.
  • Develop and deliver training on contract processes, key legal considerations, compliance matters, and risk management.
  • Continually improve legal processes and ways of working to help us scale globally while maintaining compliance with local laws, regulations, and market practices.
WHO YOU ARE:
  • Qualified to practice law in either Germany or France, with strong academic credentials.
  • A minimum of 5 years' experience either in-house at a technology company and/or within the technology practice of a leading law firm.
  • Significant experience drafting, reviewing, structuring, and negotiating a wide range of commercial agreements, including agreements governed by English and U.S. law.
  • Experience supporting technology, digital media, advertising technology, and/or privacy-related matters is strongly preferred.
  • Effective communicator with the ability to build credibility, influence stakeholders, and develop strong working relationships across legal, business, and operational teams.
  • Strong business acumen with a pragmatic, solutions-oriented approach to legal and commercial challenges.
  • Superior analytical skills, sound legal judgment, and a practical problem-solving mindset.
  • Proven ability to work collaboratively across countries, cultures, and functions in a highly international environment.
  • Self-motivated, intellectually curious, adaptable, and comfortable operating in fast-paced and often ambiguous environments.
  • Strong commitment to providing responsive, high-quality client service and practical business support.
  • Fluency in English is required, together with fluency in either German (for the Hamburg-based role) or French (for the Paris-based role).
  • Excellent interpersonal skills (sense of humor is a big plus).
