Data Scientist

The Trade Desk is changing the way global brands and their agencies advertise to audiences around the world. How? With a media buying platform that helps brands deliver a more insightful and relevant ad experience for consumers –– and sets a new standard for global reach, accuracy, and transparency. We are proud of the culture we have built. We value the unique experiences and perspectives that each person brings to The Trade Desk, and we are committed to fostering inclusive spaces where everyone can bring their authentic selves to work every day.

So, if you are talented, driven, creative, and eager to join a dynamic, globally-connected team, then we want to talk!

What we do:

• Our team is responsible for developing algorithms that run in our real-time bidding platform, with the goal of helping thousands of customers run effective advertising campaigns.
• Many of our challenges involve getting machine learning algorithms to work at scale. These challenges include dealing with sparse or noisy labels and data, maintaining low latency, and addressing unreliable ground truth.
• Data scientists on our team work closely with Engineering and Product Management throughout the entire product lifecycle, from ideation to deployment and monitoring.

What you'll do:

• Our Data Scientists contribute across the product lifecycle, with opportunities to take ownership as they grow. You will participate actively in designing, researching, building, and delivering data-focused products for our clients.
• We are a team built on a foundation of generosity and openness, and we expect our data scientists to help make others better and raise the bar for those around them.

Who you are:

• You have foundational experience in building models and are eager to learn how to work in large-scale production environments.
• You are curious about the ‘why’ behind what you are doing and can anticipate problems that may be several degrees removed.
• You have a strong data intuition. At our scale (in the order of millions of bids per seconds), many off-the-shelf modelling techniques may not be suitable. You can work from first principles to develop solutions and adapt them to our unique environment.
• You’re curious about how data science contributes to real-world impact and enjoy thinking about how your work affects clients. You have the passion and ability to contribute to discovering what will push forward one of the largest and most influential industries toward a vision of openness, transparency, and evidence-based decision-making.
• You’re collaborative, open to feedback, and value learning from peers and mentors. Our data scientists grow deep knowledge over time and exercise a high degree of leadership in their daily work. You advocate for what you believe is right while being skilled at identifying and evaluating trade-offs and being open to being proven wrong.
• You value, seek out and foster diversity. We are a global team from many diverse backgrounds. To complement this team, you will welcome ideas that are different from your own and be skilled at finding and building from common ground.
• You are a creative thinker, not bound by ‘the way things have always been done’. What you know is less important than how well you learn and innovate.
• You bring enthusiasm to the team and look for opportunities to contribute and grow in a supportive environment.

What you bring to the table

We do not expect you to know every technology we use when you start at TTD. What we care most about is that you can learn quickly and solve complex problems using the best tools for the job. However, we find that the most successful candidates typically come in with something like the following experience:

• Some hands-on experience (through work, internships, or projects) in applying data science to real-world problems.
• Technical proficiency with Python and/or Scala and big-data technologies such as Spark, combined with the ability to work independently and navigate technical ambiguity.
• Intellectual curiosity, with a commitment to self-improvement and continuous learning, alongside effective communication of progress and challenges to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
• Comfortable working in an agile, distributed team environment, proactively seeking feedback, understanding the rationale behind tasks, and the contribution to key performance indicators and operational efficiency.
